Namalu Community Home

What is NCH?

Namalu Community Home is a CBO (Community Based Organisation) in Namalu, Nakapiripirit District, Uganda. This area is located on the southern border of the Karamoja sub-region. Karamoja is known for their pastoral tribes and traditions. It’s the most underdeveloped region of Uganda. The area is affected by drought and famine, they only have one season a year with enough rain to plant crops. Many families are not able to provide enough nutritious meals for their children, which causes malnutrition.

45% of the population analysed in Karamoja are facing high levels of food insecurity (IPC report, June 2023). In Nakapiripirit District where Namalu is located, 11% of the screened children were malnourished (source: Unicef).

This organisation wants to support these children by supplying them with healthy foods while they are recovering. It as well provides a safe place where the mothers are supported and encouraged to learn more about nutrition and ways to sustain their families in the future.

A few of the activities we do include:

Training the Mothers

While the mothers are staying at Namalu Community Home, we want to use that time to teach them some skills. It will help them provide an income for their family. We are planning to teach the mothers skills like tailoring, weaving and crafts.

Education

A lot of children in Namalu don't go to school. The parents already struggle to get enough food on the table for their children, so schoolfees are too much to pay. Only three out of ten people above 10 years in Karamoja are able to read or write (2020 Uganda National Household Survey). We are looking for sponsors who can support these children in getting them an education and more hope for their future.

Help change the lives of children and families in Namalu.
